Problem
Businesses seeking to decarbonize struggle to source truly time-matched renewables. Traditional PPAs are slow, complex, and often priced with a premium that limits adoption. Even when green power is contracted, proving that a specific buyer’s demand was matched by a specific asset at a specific time is non-trivial. This requires dependable half-hour matching logic, high-fidelity data ingestion from metering and generation APIs, and an irrefutable certificate trail. The platform also needed to respect the realities of a multi-stakeholder ecosystem—buyers, asset owners, and administrators—each with distinct permissions and workflows. Solution
We approached the challenge as a single coherent service spanning marketplace, analytics, and traceability. The marketplace enables buyers to express demand profiles, sustainability constraints, and commercial preferences; behind the scenes, matching algorithms assemble portfolios of renewable assets that can satisfy demand on a half-hour basis. As data streams in from external usage and generation APIs, the insights layer renders real-time views of consumption, emissions, and match coverage, allowing buyers and sellers to understand performance at a glance and take corrective action when needed.
Traceability is enforced by a blockchain-backed certificate engine built on Hyperledger Fabric. For each watt-hour of matched generation, the system mints a granular certificate and immutably records transfers from asset to buyer, ensuring a clean chain of custody. Smart contracts prevent double issuance and double claiming, while audit trails capture the who, what, and when of every operation. Role-based access control, secured via JWT and hardened session management, separates concerns across buyers, sellers, and administrators. All data handling respects GDPR, and process design aligns with UK energy regulations and REGO expectations.
Under the hood, the platform is cloud-native and designed for scale. Containerized services orchestrated by Kubernetes support elastic growth as new assets and buyers come online. Data pipelines validate, normalize, and reconcile half-hour meter and generation data, feeding both the matching engine and the certificate ledger. Observability is built in from day one, enabling proactive monitoring and safe iteration.
